Plumbing Maintenance: Water Heater Flushing
If you are experiencing curious odors or tastes in your water not related to chlorine, your home's hot water heater is the first place to look.
Sulfur reducing bacteria and other heat resistant bacteria can occur when the water heater temperatures are less than 131º Fahrenheit. Sometimes customers will turn down the heater thermostats in order to lower energy use. Conserving energy is a good thing, but lowering the temperatures can cause bacteria to grow inside the hot water heater and cause problems.
SUB recommends flushing the hot water heater - please follow these instructions.
After the heater has been flushed, increase the thermostat temperature to at least 131º F.
