New Contract Approved for Springfield Utility Board Union Employees

March 27, 2007

Springfield Utility Board’s bargaining unit voted yesterday to approve a new union contract that included spot wage adjustments for specific positions to bring them current with market wages, as well as enhancements to several employee benefits and policies.

SUB and employee representatives of the IBEW Local 659 union reached tentative agreement on a new contract in late February after three negotiating sessions. The contract was approved by SUB’s Board of Directors at its March 7 board meeting, and was ratified by a large majority of the bargaining unit last night.

In addition, both parties agreed to extend the contract period from four years to five years.

"I feel this new contract is an amazing win for SUB employees," says Lonnie Benham, Water Division Union Shop Steward and negotiating team member. "You walk away feeling that SUB management really does care about employee retention."

Bob Linahan, SUB’s general manager, added his thanks for a successful negotiation process. "My goal was a win-win for SUB and its employees, and thanks to the hard work, the careful preparation and respectful and professional approach taken by representatives on all sides, that’s what we achieved together."

Of SUB’s 136 employees, more than 62 percent are represented by IBEW Local 659. The union represents employees across the utility, including those working in water, electric, customer service and other positions.
