So, what are LEDs, and how do you use them?

Technically, LEDs are semiconductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current is passed through them. Like CFLs, they are much more efficient than incandescent lights, which produce more heat for your energy dollar than light.

In fact, LEDs are ultra-efficient, last a long time and are perfect for many applications, including landscaping, cove lighting, task lighting, and steps, and they work well in cold weather.

Interestingly, there is actually no such thing as a “white” LED. To get white light the kind used for lighting homes offices, different color LEDs are mixed or covered with a phosphor material that converts the color of the light.

Now that the winter lighting season is upon us, give LEDs a try. They can be a useful addition to your lighting mix, and are a great way to save money on your electricity bill.
